Ce cours \u00e9tait une r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 un appel de l'Universit\u00e9 Concordia \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al pour enseigner un cours interdisciplinaire en r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 un \u00ab wicked problem. \u00bb <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Avec la justice environnementale comme objectif critique cl\u00e9, nous avons propos\u00e9 d'explorer les nombreuses \u00e9chelles de d\u00e9chets, de l'individuel \u00e0 l'institutionnel, du local au global, et d'examiner le r\u00f4le de la politique et de la gouvernance dans le traitement de la place complexe et in\u00e9vitable des d\u00e9chets dans nos vies. Notre id\u00e9e initiale \u00e9tait d'organiser une randonn\u00e9e cycliste \u00e0 travers notre ville de Montr\u00e9al qui s'arr\u00eaterait sur des sites de d\u00e9chets et qui combinerait notre passion pour la p\u00e9dagogie incarn\u00e9e et les \u00e9tudes sur les d\u00e9chets. Bien que COVID nous ait oblig\u00e9s \u00e0 restructurer le cours pour passer d'une visite de groupe \u00e0 des visites individuelles, le cyclisme est rest\u00e9 au c\u0153ur de notre mission. Our Story We, Liz Miller, and\u00a0 MJ Thompson, initiated WasteScapes with a field course entitled \u201cWasteScapes\u201d (2020). The course was a response to an open call at Concordia University in Montreal to teach an inter-disciplinary course in response\u00a0 to a \u201cwicked problem.\u201d With environmental justice as a key critical lens, we proposed to explore the many scales of waste from individual to institutional, from local to global, and to consider the role of policy and governance in addressing the complex and inevitable place of waste in our lives. Our initial idea was to lead a cycling tour through our city of Montreal that would stop at waste sites, and would combine our passion for embodied pedagogy and discard studies. While COVID forced us to re-structure the course from a group tour to individual tours\u2013 cycling remained core to our mission. The following year we taught a variation of the course with an emphasis on writing in place, \u201cPlace Under Pressure\u201d (2021). We then developed the WasteScapes App to be able to work with other Montreal educators. Creative media technologist and professor Kim Grinfeder generously invited us to re-skin his code from his walking tour in Miami, &#8220;Know Your Grove.&#8221;\u00a0 The 41 sites and six tours that make up the WasteScapes App were developed with the talent and support of many graduate and undergraduate students at Concordia.
